Mesa County Juvenile Diversion Coordinator - DA in Grand Junction, Colorado

JOB SUMMARY:

Supervises, develops and manages the Juvenile Diversion Program (District Court) and Youth Accountability Program (County Court) within the company. This program was created in order to provide community based alternatives to youth entering the juvenile justice system and diversion from the formal court process. The goal of this program is to counsel youth and parents, reduce juvenile recidivism and facilitate a change in the juvenile offender s behaviors and/or attitudes while avoiding the need for formal court prosecution.

Essential Duties ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Reviews juvenile cases submitted to the company s Office by local law enforcement agencies or by local school district, to determine eligibility for diversion from formal court prosecution.

Meets with juvenile offenders and their parents to determine if the youth is accountable, amenable to supervision, and appropriate for a diversion program. Through screening and data collection, the coordinator identifies the risks and needs of the juvenile, addresses family issues that may be contributing to the negative behaviors and attitudes of the juvenile, and monitor services that may be appropriate to support the juvenile to change behaviors and attitudes.

Creates contracts with the juvenile and parents that are specific to the needs of the juvenile, determines appropriate length of contract, and conditions of contract. Meets with and supervises the juvenile while in the program to ensure they are complying with the contract. Timely monitors contracts and communicates with juvenile/parents. Makes determinations to close the contract successfully or refers back to court. Authorizes release of evidence, closes cases and completes all appropriate paperwork.

Communicates with and partners with local agencies to monitor the progress of the juvenile and the juvenile s family. This routinely includes finding off-site locations for a youth to complete their useful public service, referring the youth to counseling and/or substance abuse treatment, verifying school progress and attendance, locating and applying for funding to pay for prosocial activities and incentives, locating and applying for funding to pay for therapeutic services, and obtaining waivers from the juvenile/parent to monitor progress with outside agencies.

Assures timely assignment of diversion referrals with other diversion coordinator(s), ensures reliable and consistent documentation of case management, proper use of software and diversion modules.

Engages in meaningful consultation with victims to ensure compliance with the Victim Rights Amendment concerning diversion referrals from court. Act as a liaison between the juvenile and their victim(s) by making proper notifications, collecting restitution, and monitoring any other contact between parties.

Completes appropriate paperwork to ensure compliance with grant requirements including detailed statistics, job description, goals and actual performance statistics.

Serves as a representative for the company s office on various community boards or committees as directed by the Director of Diversion.

Coordinates interns in the diversion program.

Participates in Juvenile Justice trainings.

Perform community outreach and provide community education on issues facing juveniles in our community.

Provides instruction and oversight of the administrative assistant who works on behalf of juvenile diversion coordinators and provides feedback about such to Director of Diversion and the Managing Administrative Assistant.

Facilitat s communication with concerning trends, gaps, updates in the program, use of software, or other needs.

Oral and written communications must be clear and effective.

Researches, completes and files responses to Petition to Expungement after consultation with the JV Chief DDA and Director of Diversion. Engages in meaningful consultation with victims to ensure compliance with the Victim Rights Amendment concerning expungement of records.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Demonstrates professionalism, composure, and appropriate interpersonal skills during performance of tasks, duties and responsibilities that take place in this adversarial system. This adversarial system includes contentious dealings (in person, by phone, electronically, or by written correspondence) with opposing counsel, upset individuals that may be defendants, victims, witnesses, law enforcement, or other members of the public, often resulting in mental and physical stresses.

Demonstrate professionalism, composure, and appropriate interpersonal skills in reviewing and/or discussing information pertaining to criminal cases. These criminal cases require frequent exposure to assaults and
