POSITION OVERVIEW

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under supervision, monitors and maintains water or wastewater treatment facilities, systems and equipment to comply with State and Federal permits.

Work consists of fairly standard procedures and tasks where basic analytical ability is required, as in the comparison of numbers and simple facts in selecting the correct action. Monitors and maintains water distribution system to comply with State and Federal permits. Conducts field runs to utility districts to calculate and record daily usage. Performs preventive maintenance inspections (i.e. checking equipment, taking samples, adjusting operating parameters and visually inspecting treatment processes). Ensures plant safety and sanitary requirements; washes down treatment processors; cleans clarifiers, blower filters, rotor screens. Maintains plant grounds (i.e. collecting litter). Maintains records and logs. Assists providing tours. Communicates and coordinates work with other operators and support personnel by radio, telephone and e-mail. May be assigned to the daily activities of a 24-hour control center or plant control room, with responsibilities that include the monitoring of water treatment critical processes; and to respond, notify, and dispatch operations and maintenance personnel to keep systems within the regulatory requirements of multiple systems. Performs other duties as requested.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position requires lifting of heavy items of up to 60 pounds and/or walking on rough surfaces routinely and/or regular physical exertion such as climbing of ladders.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Management position at the Tier 1 Level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate

No experience is required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

A valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2). Within one year of entry into classification, must obtain a Texas Class “D” Water Operator’s certificate. Must obtain a Texas Class “C” Water Operator’s certificate appropriate to position location, such as surface water, groundwater, distribution, maintenance wastewater plant or water, within two (2) years after obtaining “D” certification.

PREFERENCES

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
