Description Summary Participate in the activities of the Composite Materials Research Laboratory (CMRL) relating to prepreg applications of carbon fiber composites. Ability to work independently having strong communication skills. Good working knowledge in CFRP (chem/mech) field. Capable of analyzing and interpreting information while promoting improvement and development, guided IP activities. Leads team project when called upon and supports development for entry level team members. Duties and Responsibilities Jointly responsible for maintaining a safe working environment and implementing safe operating procedures to ensure an accident-free record and continued compliance with all waste and environmental regulations. Investigate fundamental phenomena and mechanisms of carbon fiber, matrix resin, and carbon fiber reinforced composites as required under guided directions and instructions. Develop and manage a project schedule to meet objectives and deadlines. Carry out research activities including designing of experiments, ordering test requests, preparing samples, organizing test samples and supplies in preparation for tests. Create formulated resins/prepregs and perform various tests and collect data under general directions and instructions with scientific competence. Compile, interpret and explain results with scientific competence under guided direction and instruction into internal reports such as weekly reports and presentations. Support transfer of newly-developed technology to large-scale production. Prepare and write patent applications and specifications under guided directions and instructions. Assist Legal & Compliance (ie. regulatory status, NDA agreements, Export Control). Promote innovative ideas, concepts and experimental procedures through participation of conferences, workshops and literature/ patent searches and reviews. Order and maintain stock of general lab supplies and consumables; implement storage and maintenance manuals associated with lab instruments. Coordinate purchase of raw materials, equipment modifications and repairs, and shipping samples with other CMA departments and outside vendors. Assist with maintaining instruments and equipment in clean, operational and orderly condition. Assist with development of Work Instructions for experimental procedures and machine/equipment operations. Support higher level research scientists in development of capital investment projects. Prepare and write technical papers for submission to magazines, journals and conferences as requested under guided directions and instructions. Participate in conferences and expos as requested. Ability to lead and train lower level or new Associates on instrument and equipment operations, experiments and work instructions. Posses a good knowledge of laboratory test techniques with regard to performing tests, collecting, analyzing and documenting data.
